Democratizing Digital Farming for All –
FARMTOPIA’S PATH TO EMPOWERING
SMALL FARMS WITH DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES

Despite significant public and private investments, the adoption and utilization of agricultural digital solutions (ADSs) among EU farmers, particularly small farms, have remained limited. This limitation poses a significant problem as ADSs are widely regarded as an avenue to enhance the agricultural sector’s economic and environmental performance. For smaller farms, the challenge lies in accessing cost-effective digital agriculture technologies that bridge the digital divide and effectively boost their environmental and economic outcomes.

Farmtopia’s approach towards change

Fostering co-creation of Agriculture Digital Solutions (ADSs) to ensure they will solve real problems and fit the needs of small farms.
Cutting costs for farmers and ADSs’ providers by creating reusable software modules, business and governance models, and infrastructure to scale-up ADSs.

Guiding co-creation, deployment, and piloting of innovative ADSs, while designing and validating supporting business and
governance models.

ADSs Objectives

Increased food production and food security

Reduced environmental footprint of farming

Improved working conditions

Reduced costs

Enhanced transparency across the value chain

Support alternative business models, creating additional revenue streams

Digital literacy is lower among small EU farms - and almost 70% of farms are less than 5 ha! That is why Farmtopia aims for:

Sustainable Innovation Pilots

The project comprises of 18 Sustainable Innovation Pilots (SIPs). Of these, 9 pilots have already been pre-selected, while the remaining 9 will be awarded through an Open Call. The SIPs primarily target specific crops and livestock for which existing ADSs are underdeveloped and inadequate, as well as regional crops of significance.
