Farmtopia Early Warning Notification Service: Turning Farm Data into Timely Alerts: Farmtopia’s 15th Practice Abstract

This blog post is based on the 15th Practice Abstract from the second batch of Farmtopia Practice Abstracts.

Farming often depends on acting at the right moment. Changes in weather, pest pressure, disease risk and other conditions can quickly affect crops, input use and farm performance. For farmers and advisors, receiving the right information early enough can make the difference between taking preventive action and responding to a problem after it has already developed.
However, warning services often rely on separate data sources, manual interpretation or disconnected applications. This can make it difficult to bring together information from weather forecasts, farm observations and analytical models in time to support decisions.
Farmtopia developed an Early Warning Notification Service to demonstrate how these different sources can be combined into a practical digital decision-support service.

Bringing different data sources together

The Farmtopia Early Warning Notification Service combines several of the project’s core digital modules.

The Digital Fieldbook provides structured farm observations and farm-level records. The Data Integration module supports access to environmental and meteorological information, while the Data Exchange module enables interoperable sharing and use of relevant data.

The service then applies notification logic and data-processing rules to identify predefined risk conditions. Warnings can be generated based on a combination of nearby farm observations, weather forecasts and algorithmic risk indicators.

The service has also been integrated into Gaiasense FMIS, demonstrating how the approach can operate within an existing Agricultural Digital Solution environment rather than functioning as a completely separate system.

Testing early warnings in practice

The service was tested within Farmtopia SIP1, involving five farms and two rule-based scenarios.

During the testing period, the system generated three warnings based on weather and field observations, including information on temperature, humidity and irrigation.

The testing demonstrated how data that farmers and digital services already collect can be processed into timely notifications when predefined conditions are detected.

Rather than requiring farmers to continuously monitor multiple information sources themselves, the service can bring relevant signals together and alert them when attention may be needed.

What can the service offer?

The Early Warning Notification Service is designed to support several practical applications.

  • Timely risk awareness: Environmental, meteorological and field-observation data can be transformed into actionable alerts.
  • Reuse of Farmtopia infrastructure: The service combines existing Digital Fieldbook, Data Integration and Data Exchange components instead of requiring a standalone warning platform.
  • Operational decision support: Timely information can support data-driven decisions aimed at reducing production risks and improving farm management.
  • Scalability: The same architecture can support different types of warnings, from weather-driven alerts to observation-based and rule-based notifications.

How could farmers and advisors use it?

Farmers can receive alerts when predefined risk conditions are detected on their holdings or in nearby areas. For advisors, the service can support the configuration and monitoring of warning rules across groups of farms, enabling more proactive and evidence-based advisory services.
Cooperatives could also use group-level warning workflows to improve coordination between members during periods of increased risk.
For AgTech SMEs, the Farmtopia implementation provides a model for developing compatible decision-support applications without having to build a complete data ingestion, interoperability and notification system from the beginning.

What comes next?

The service can be further developed by expanding the range of warning scenarios and improving how risk thresholds are configured. Future work could also strengthen email and message delivery, validate the service using additional real-world datasets from Farmtopia SIPs and improve the user interface for configuring and managing alerts. As digital farming systems become increasingly connected, services that bring together farm, environmental and weather data could help farmers move from reacting to problems towards taking more timely, preventive action.
