Connecting Digital Farming Innovation with Business Opportunities: Farmtopia and Enterprise Europe Network Serbia (EENS)

Innovation does not end when a new technology is developed. For an idea to create lasting impact, it needs to reach the people who can use it, improve it, invest in it and bring it to new markets. This is where Farmtopia and Enterprise Europe Network Serbia (EEN Serbia) can create an important synergy. While Farmtopia focuses on making digital farming more accessible and relevant to small-scale farmers, EEN Serbia helps innovative businesses and organisations turn opportunities into partnerships, market connections and growth.
Together, they represent two complementary sides of the same challenge: how to move agricultural innovation from the pilot stage towards wider adoption and real-world impact.

Making digital farming work for real needs

Farmtopia   is built around a simple but important principle: digitalisation should respond to the realities of farmers. The project is testing and demonstrating Agricultural Digital Solutions through Sustainable Innovation Pilots across Europe, working with farmers and other stakeholders to identify practical challenges and explore how digital technologies can address them. This approach helps ensure that innovation is not developed in isolation. Technologies are tested in real farming environments, while the needs, experiences and feedback of farmers help shape their implementation.

But once a promising solution has been demonstrated, another question emerges: How can it reach more users and become a sustainable business opportunity?

From innovation to internationalisation

This is where EEN Serbia brings a complementary perspective. As part of the Enterprise Europe Network, EEN Serbia supports Serbian innovative SMEs and other organisations with services related to business partnerships, innovation, international growth, EU-funded projects and access to new markets. The network connects businesses with partners across Europe and beyond, creating opportunities to exchange knowledge, technologies and expertise. For agricultural technology companies, this type of support can be particularly valuable. A digital solution developed for one farming context may have potential in another country – but identifying the right partners, understanding market needs and establishing international connections can be challenging for smaller companies. Networks such as EEN can help bridge that gap.

Where Farmtopia and EEN Serbia meet

The potential synergy between the two initiatives lies in connecting demonstrated innovation with the business ecosystem needed to scale it.
Farmtopia can bring:
– Real-world testing of digital farming solutions
– Direct engagement with farmers and their needs
– Experience in identifying practical applications for digital technologies
– Lessons from innovation pilots and different farming contexts
EEN Serbia can bring:
– Access to an international business network
– Cross-promotion
– Opportunities for cross-border partnerships
– Support for innovative SMEs looking to grow internationally
– Connections that can facilitate business and technology cooperation

Together, these elements can help create a pathway from “Does this solution work?” to “How can this solution reach more farmers and markets?”

Turning connections into opportunities

One of the most important ingredients for successful agricultural innovation is connection.
Farmers need access to technologies that genuinely address their challenges. Technology providers need opportunities to test, improve and commercialise their solutions. Researchers and innovation projects need channels through which their results can reach businesses and users.
EEN’s experience in facilitating business matchmaking is particularly relevant here. The network supports international B2B meetings and company visits designed to encourage business connections, knowledge exchange and technology transfer.
This creates opportunities for digital farming innovations emerging from projects such as Farmtopia to become part of a wider ecosystem of companies, researchers, investors, farmers and support organisations.

From pilot to wider adoption

A successful pilot is only the beginning. For digital farming innovation to create lasting impact, solutions need to be replicated, adapted and adopted at scale – supported by viable business models, strong partnerships and access to new markets. This is where the synergy between Farmtopia and EEN Serbia becomes particularly relevant. Farmtopia brings a farmer-centred approach to developing and testing digital solutions, while EEN Serbia provides connections, networking online promotion and opportunities for business development, internationalisation and innovation cooperation. Together, they highlight a simple but powerful pathway: Innovation creates possibilities. Connections create opportunities. Adoption creates impact.

By connecting farmers, technology providers, researchers and businesses, this synergy can help move digital farming solutions from successful pilots towards wider adoption and a more competitive, sustainable agri-food sector.
