Introducing Insights from the 2024 SOFI Report
With only six years remaining to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the world is alarmingly off track to meet SDG2—ending hunger and malnutrition in all its forms. According to the recently published State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World – SOFI Report 2024, global hunger remains a pressing challenge, threatening the lives and well-being of millions.
While some progress has been made in reducing food insecurity in specific regions, much of the world lags behind. The SOFI report, co-authored by five UN agencies—FAO, WHO, WFP, IFAD, and UNICEF – warns that if current trends continue, 582 million people will still face hunger by 2030. Additionally, 2.33 billion people, or 28.9 percent of the global population, were moderately or severely food insecure in 2023.
The report identifies key drivers of food insecurity: conflict, climate change, economic instability, poor diets, and inequality. These issues are deeply interconnected, exacerbating the global hunger crisis. Climate change, in particular, disrupts food systems, affecting crop yields and increasing the frequency of extreme weather events. Meanwhile, conflict displaces communities and destroys agricultural infrastructure, further deepening food insecurity.
Financing: The Critical Roadblock for Ending Hunger
One of the central focuses of this year’s report is the challenge of financing efforts to end hunger. Many low- and middle-income countries face significant financial barriers that prevent them from addressing food insecurity effectively. The 2024 SOFI report underscores the need for more robust and better-coordinated financing to achieve SDG2.
The report introduces new definitions and cost estimates for financing hunger eradication efforts, emphasizing the need to invest in measures that ensure everyone has access to safe, nutritious, and sufficient food (SDG Target 2.1) and to eliminate all forms of malnutrition (SDG Target 2.2). However, the gap between what is needed and what is currently being funded is vast, with underfunding posing a significant threat to global progress.
The Urgent Need for Action
The SOFI report calls for greater coordination between governments, international organizations, and the private sector to better mobilize resources for food security. Improving data collection and tracking investments will be crucial in ensuring that resources are directed where they are most needed. Urgent action is required now, not only to meet global hunger targets but to prevent future generations from inheriting the dire consequences of inaction.
The SOFI report stresses that addressing hunger is not just a moral obligation but also an economic necessity. Failing to act now will result in far higher costs in the future, estimated to reach trillions of dollars. On the other hand, investing in food security today will yield significant returns, improving health, economic stability, and social resilience.
